Well, it is his place of origin and the place his family lives, and even people from rubbish families often still feel some kind of positive connection to them mixed in with whatever else they might also feel.
But since Francis has just faked his death (or had it faked for him, I guess), there’d be all kinds of problems for him and his clan if he was seen there again, alive and in good health, so he’d have to stay away regardless.
if I remember correctly, the demon rules of succession have relatives taking the ruling title over any other choice. The only way someone else could get kingship is to kill the entire ruling family. So while it is Francis’s place of origin, he has no remaining family there.
Good memory, Dragonsmith! I had forgotten that this was explained and had to go look it up.
Turns out it’s not quite accurate, just pretty close. The way Praak puts the matter in this strip is, “A clan’s ruling line must be completely removed from power before another clan can take the throne.” Family members not of the ruling line might well survive, and even those “removed from power” don’t necessarily have to be removed by death, even though in practice it might work out that way most of the time. And in Francis’ case, the other members of his clan’s ruling line are dead, as this strip shows. We also know his brother was killed, but the fate of other family members he may have outside the ruling line is less certain. (We also haven’t been told much about demon succession laws and how it’s determined who is and isn’t in a ruling line.)
SO GLAD I have not been trying to read this as you updated Pete. I had read up to knowing a fast reader and then I’ve been AWOL until now. PERFECT timing on my part if I do say so myself. 🙂
The demon is dead. Long live the demon!
This is one of the best goodbyes I’ve ever seen.
I’m proud of you, now get out.
Praak: Now go, and never return to this basically empty underground cave full of violent sociopaths with selfish magic who treat you like crap.
Francis: … okay?

He finally used his chosen name. <3
I DIDN’T EVEN REALIZE THAT! You’re right! 😀

Hmm… I was expecting a different series of plot twists. Though we may still see them.
