I am really hoping that they find some way to get around the societal expectations of the elves. Mike and Crystal go so well together and after all this build up it seems a shame to just drop it.
Being oppressed by a central, powerful family is no picnic. Expect to get support from a good percentage of society when you actually are brave enough to step up and say no to them. You might have to start over in an alternate location with whatever volunteers are willing to leave and join you, or they might peacefully overthrow the current order (sparing their lives, of course).
But it’s a long ways away. The whole society won’t just roll over for you. (Or shouldn’t.)

Personally I think it would be a little… convenient if elven society suddenly decided to pull their collective head from their backside
