That was kind of my interpretation. It’s possible that removing the enchantment would be “bad” somehow, or dangerous for Mike or for everyone else or what have you. But so far Rayner has struck me as the sort of guy who’d put an enchantment on Mike less for the sake of altruistic protection than for the sake of serving some purpose of his own. Undoubtedly there’s more to Rayner than Pete’s shown us yet–I wasn’t expecting this conversation with Aleana to look like this, which shows what I know–but that’s more or less how I’ve been reading him so far.
Maybe the enchantment is dampening his powers so aside from those who do know he’s a trimagus, no one can really figure it out. This keeps him from being locked up/studied and able to continue his studies. After all, Rayner did say his lessons were important.
