Bardsworth: The Novel

on November 30, 2012

When I first started writing for Bardsworth, I only had the vaguest notion of where I was going to go with the overall story. As time went on, I built upon that and gave myself more direction. It became incredibly complex, and I’m still trying to figure things out as I go along. In addition, there are many aspects of the world of Bardsworth that I’ve never gone into. What you see in the comic is a small portion of what’s in my head. For these reasons, I’m finally delving into a project that I’ve wanted to do for a long time.

Within the next year, I will be releasing the first Bardsworth novel. I’m thinking about doing the same thing with this book as I’m doing with my fantasy noir series, and that’s to write the novel as three intertwining stories. Each one will be released separately as an ebook, then I’ll combine them all together into one book and do a print version of it.

The story will follow the comic to a degree, but it won’t follow it exactly. I want to try things in the novel that I either didn’t do in the comic, or fix things that I wish I hadn’t done, or add to the story in ways that I wasn’t able to. Not to mention that adapting a series of four-panel strips into a coherent novel is difficult without some changes involved. So think about it in two ways. The first is to view the comic as the first draft of the book. The other is to think of the book as the “Ultimate Bardsworth Universe”, a la Marvel.

I’m excited to be doing this finally. I’ve always been more of a writer than an artist, so to take these characters that I love and work with them in an environment that I’m comfortable in is kind of a dream job. And I hope you guys are excited by this prospect, too.

We Interrupt Your Regularly Scheduled Bardsworth Update…

on November 14, 2012

As much as it pains me to do it to you folks, I won’t be posting this week’s strip.  I need to take a mental health holiday.  Katie and I were hit some major league bad news in the area of finances, and it’s been tough to focus on much else.  So please excuse the lack of zaniness this week and be sure to check back next week.

That having been said, and in regards to our finances, I’d like to say that I’m open to taking on commissions.  If you’d like a Bardsworth character (or two or five), or a fairy picture, or a My Little Pony character, or whatever, shoot me an email at pete(at)bardsworth(dot)com and let me know.  Commission prices start at $20 (higher depending on what medium you want it on and how complicated it is).

Thanks for your patience.  Hopefully my head will be clearer next week.

Happy Birthday and Some Other Stuff

on November 9, 2012

Strap yourself in for a long blog post. This is almost like one of my old “State of the Union” posts I used to do back in the day. Maybe I should start doing those again.

1.) On Wednesday (November 7), Bardsworth officially turned seven years old. Seven years. I remember when I first started doing it I would hear people say that most webcomics never made it past the first year, and if they did they’d begin to die out not too long after that. I’ve seen it happen (one of the reasons I stopped keeping a links page), and I’m glad to say that I am not one of those people. Bardsworth is still going strong, if a bit slowly, and will continue on until it’s finished. Probably sometime in the year 2048.

2.) We are pushing our inventory of cookie jewelry in the store, so if you’re looking for a kitschy holiday gift for someone, or if you just want some for yourself, go and check it out.

3.) I am a little behind on the gifts for the people who donated towards our California trip in September. Please be aware that I haven’t forgotten you; I’ve just been dealing with a maelstrom of things and intend to get back on track. I’m also behind in getting a new wallpaper up. I hope to have something up sometime next week.

4.) Some of you might be aware of this and others might not. Facebook has been screwing around with their algorithms in regards to pages. This means that if you “liked” the Bardsworth page, you are probably not seeing all of the posts that I make over there. In order to reach all of you, I’d have to shell out an insane amount of money. Keep it classy, Facebook. Anyway, in order to bypass this, feel free to friend my personal account on Facebook (please send a note saying you’re a Bardsworth reader, though). I have a bunch of Bardsworth readers with whom I friends already anyway. Please also consider following my Twitter feed, using the RSS feed here at the site, and/or following my Tumblr (I’m going to start posting updates and things there starting with this post). Let’s stick it to Facebook however we can.

And that’s all for now. Hope you’re enjoying the story line and I hope you enjoy the next one as well (I’m itching to start posting it).

I’m An Idiot…

on October 11, 2012

I’ve had this wallpaper ready to go for over a week, and I never posted it.  So, for whoever wants to donate this month, you get Keira’s smiling face greeting you every time you see your desktop.

Colored Hair Everywhere!

on October 4, 2012

A couple of things. First, if you’re interested in stocking up on some Bardsworth merchandise either for yourself or as gifts for the holidays, we’re having a sale on select items in the Fairy Magik store. We got some cool swag in there, so if you’ve never checked it out, now is the time!

Secondly, the two ladies in today’s comic (10/4/12) are cameos that I’ve had planned for a while. Sarah (pink hair) and Jenn (purple hair) are very dear friends of ours, and I always thought they’d fit in well with the Bardsworth world. They are kindred spirits – writers, artisans, entrepeneurs, and – most importantly – My Little Pony fans. And yes, they do have pink and purple hair respectively. Be sure to check out their website, The Fable Tribe, for some awesome goodies, and check out Sarah’s website for her writing.

By the way, they do actually have so much tea in their house that they could probably open a successful tea shop.
